Cat6 vs. Cat6A: which one your office needs
Cat6 supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet, but only up to about 55 meters; past that, throughput drops to 1 Gigabit. Most single-floor offices with a wiring closet near the workstations stay inside that range and can run Cat6 without a tradeoff. Cat6A supports the full 10 Gigabit spec across the standard 100-meter run and shields better against interference, which matters in buildings with runs near elevator shafts, HVAC equipment, or other cabling bundles. Cat6A cable is thicker and stiffer, which means larger conduit and more labor time to pull and terminate, part of why it costs more per drop. A straightforward rule: Cat6A for runs over 55 meters, for any building planning a network refresh inside the cable's 15+ year service life, and for spaces with heavy electromagnetic interference. Cat6 for shorter runs in a stable, already-built office with no near-term bandwidth jump planned.

Planning drops per office
A reasonable planning baseline is two data drops per workstation (one for the computer, one spare for a phone, secondary monitor dock, or future device) plus one drop per wireless access point and one per printer or shared device. A 20-person office typically lands in the 40–50 drop range once APs and shared equipment are counted. Open-plan layouts with modular furniture often need fewer drops per person if furniture-integrated raceways share connections across desks; private-office layouts usually need more because each room needs its own run back to the closet. Testing and certification
A drop isn't done when the cable is pulled and the jack is punched down. Every run gets tested with a certification tester (Fluke or equivalent) that verifies wire map, length, insertion loss, and crosstalk against the TIA/EIA-568 standard for the cable category installed. Cat6A testing in particular checks for alien crosstalk, interference from adjacent cable bundles, which is one of the failure modes Cat6A's extra shielding is built to prevent. The installer should hand over a test report per drop, not just a verbal confirmation that everything works. That report is what a future IT team or building inspector will ask for if a connection acts up later.
Process and timeline
A Cat6 or Cat6A job runs in four stages: a walkthrough to count drops and check pathway conditions (existing conduit, ceiling type, distance from the closet), a written scope and price range, the install itself (pulling cable, terminating at both the jack and the patch panel, and labeling each run), and testing and certification before signoff. Small jobs (10–25 drops) typically run one to three days on site, most of it install labor rather than walkthrough or testing time. Occupied-office jobs usually take longer than an equivalent drop count in unoccupied space, since cable pulls through finished ceilings need access panels and scheduling around business hours rather than open floor access. Existing cabling: reuse, upgrade, or start over
Not every job is a blank slate. An office moving into a space with existing Cat5e cabling has three options: reuse it as-is (fine for basic connectivity, but it caps out well below Cat6/Cat6A speeds and won't meet most modern IT standards), have it tested and re-certified if it's unclear whether it still meets spec, or pull new Cat6/Cat6A alongside or in place of it. Reusing old cabling saves the material and pull cost but carries risk: cable run inside walls for a decade or more may have been damaged, poorly terminated, or routed in ways that don't meet current pathway standards, and none of that shows up without testing.
