Why a site survey comes before buying anything

A site survey measures how far signal actually travels through your building's specific walls, floors, and interference sources, rather than relying on a manufacturer's open-air coverage spec. Concrete, metal studs, elevator shafts, and even dense server racks all cut real-world range well below what a spec sheet advertises. A predictive survey (software-modeled from a floor plan) is faster and cheaper; an active survey (a technician walking the space with test equipment, done after initial AP placement) confirms the model against reality and catches dead zones before the job is called finished. A business network almost always needs more than one WiFi network broadcasting. Separating staff traffic, guest access, and any IoT or building-systems devices (badge readers, cameras, smart thermostats) onto isolated VLANs (virtual local area networks) keeps a compromised guest device or an insecure IoT gadget from reaching internal file servers and business systems. This is configuration work done at install time, not something added later without real effort: the switch and controller need to be set up for VLANs from the start, and each SSID (the network name a device connects to) gets mapped to its own VLAN with its own access rules. Controller-based vs. standalone access points

Access points can run in one of two architectures.
